Hours of Service

Truck driver hours of service regulations are rules established by the United States Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to govern the number of hours a commercial truck driver can operate a vehicle and to ensure drivers get adequate rest. The purpose of these regulations is to prevent driver fatigue and reduce the number of accidents caused by tired drivers. The current hours of service regulations for commercial truck drivers in the United States consist of the following: 11-Hour Driving Limit: A driver may drive a maximum of 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty. 14-Hour Limit: A driver may not drive beyond the 14th consecutive hour after coming on duty, following 10 consecutive hours off duty. Off-duty time does not extend the 14-hour period. Rest Breaks: A driver can only drive if eight hours or less have passed since the end of the driver's last off-duty or sleeper-berth period of at least 30 minutes. 60/70-Hour Limit: A driver may not drive after 60/70 hours on duty in 7/8 consecutive days. A driver can restart a 7/8 consecutive day period after taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty. Sleeper Berth Provision: Drivers using a sleeper berth must take at least 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth, plus a separate 2 consecutive hours either in the sleeper berth, off duty, or any combination of the two. It is important for drivers to accurately record their hours of service to ensure compliance with these regulations. Failure to comply with hours of service regulations can result in fines for both the driver and the carrier, as well as potential safety risks for the driver and other motorists on the road. Overall, the truck driver hours of service regulations are designed to promote safety and prevent driver fatigue. These rules help ensure that drivers are well-rested and able to safely operate commercial vehicles on the roads.
